As the weather turn cold, cars need to have maintenance done so as to reduce the risk of having an accident or breakdown during the winter season. First on the maintenance comes the battery. Is the battery new or well maintained?
Check the tires for any damage and pressure. Is there any excessive wear on a tire or a low pressure?
Does your car have winter tires?
Did you get your brakes checked recently or before the start of winter?
Does your car have a decent set of wiper blades?
Does your car have at least half a tank of fuel present at all times during winter?
Have you had your headlights and tail lights checked?
Car batteries have a greater probability of dying in winter due to an added strain from the cold weather. Also check the terminals for any corrosion. Get the battery replaced or cleaned.
Most tires tend to deflate when the temperature drops below 32 degrees F. Also if there is a wear or a tear on a tire, get it fixed or replaced. It is better to check tire pressure on a weekly basis in winter.
It is better to have winter tires put on the car as they provide better control, shorter stopping distance and more traction. This is applicable to both scenarios of having snowfall and no snowfall.
Well maintained brakes are a necessity during winter so it is better to get them checked once before winter starts and once in mid-winter.
A proper set of blades make a lot of difference in winter during snowfall. When ice forms on the glass, the blades get destroyed fast.
Fill the tank to at least half if the car will be moving and a full tank if it will move sparsely during the season as low fuel and extra empty space in the tank may lead to moisture damage which may also freeze the tank leading to greater damage.
Get them checked and replace any bulb which you may think will not last the winter. In the end, it is going to help your own visibility. It is also better to add fog lights if there is an option to.
You can also check your windscreen for cracks, anti-freeze fluids or even winter grade oil if you have the option and the financial power to do so. If not, you can get through winter easily with all that you are doing.
